The Toyota Tacoma has a wide-reaching appeal. From home improvement enthusiasts to overlanders to commuters, there’s not a niche the Tacoma can’t fill. It’s as versatile as a vehicle can be while excelling in style, comfort, capability, and functionality. In addition to its superb factory features, the aftermarket support for the Tacoma platform is incredibly strong.

Aftermarket Audio Systems

For music connoisseurs, Toyota offers two audio packages. The basic package is standard on SR, SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road models. If you want an upgraded audio experience, Toyota allows you to opt for a premium JBL speaker package on the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road trims. This enhanced audio package is standard on TRD Pro and Limited models of the Tacoma.

If you did not get the upgraded speaker system installed by Toyota in your Tacoma, fret not. There are several superb aftermarket audio systems available that can transform the soundscape inside your truck. These aftermarket options can even act as an upgrade to the premium JBL speakers Toyota uses, so those who prioritize sound quality should also consider switching.

With so many sound system alternatives available for your Toyota Tacoma, choosing the right option may seem like a daunting task. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to the best sound systems to buy for your Tacoma. Check them out below.

JBL Evolution Series

JBL Evolution Series

The premium JBL system available from Toyota is no slouch when it comes to factory audio. For those seeking to upgrade while retaining the sterling reputation of the JBL name, the Evolution Series is a phenomenal choice. Designed specifically for Tacomas that come equipped with the upgraded JBL system, this aftermarket solution is available in multiple configurations to fit your needs.

You can choose to retain your factory subwoofer and JBL speakers or opt to upgrade the subwoofer, speakers, or both. This kit is available in different stages, as well, to customize your audio experience to your preferences. When it comes to enhancing your premium JBL system, there is no better option than the Evolution Series.

System 500

System 500

For many, upgrading the factory Tacoma speakers is a priority in improving sound quality. When it comes to the best Toyota Tacoma sound systems, however, the emphasis is typically placed on the amplifier. The System 500 is the perfect example of how upgrading to something like the included Multi-Channel 64-Bit DSP Power Amplifier can revolutionize the sound in your Tacoma.

In addition to improving the factory system, choosing something like System 500 gives you the flexibility to purchase your preferred speakers to work with the kit. You can then decide to opt for a dedicated subwoofer amplifier and subwoofer system, adding to the impressive quality of this premium aftermarket solution for non-JBL Tacomas.

Reference 500

Reference 500

Similar to the System 500, the Reference 500 sound system for Toyota Tacoma is designed for trucks that did not come with the JBL option from the factory. There are many overlaps between this system and the one above, including the ability to customize it to your preferences. For example, there are multiple sub options that allow you to both adhere to a budget and enjoy unbelievable bass quality.

Where the Reference 500 differentiates itself is its inclusion of new speakers to replace those your Tacoma comes with from the factory. Included in the Reference 500 sound system are soft dome tweeters, carbon fiber woofers, and two-way coaxial carbon speakers with built-in tweeters. The result is unparalleled clarity no matter how loud you turn it up. This system preserves every micro-detail of your music while delivering exceptional volume.

These kits are specifically designed to work with Tacomas ranging from the model year 2005 to 2021. Each kit includes plug-and-play speakers to replace those that come from the factory.

Each kit includes the following speakers.

  • Front 1” Soft Dome Tweeter
  • Front 6” x 9” Woofer

Interested in the reference 500 with dual sub and dedicated sub amp. Will I have to run an additional cable to the passenger side or will the connection to the second sub be on the power bundle that’s run on the drivers side? Hope that makes sense.
