The Ultimate Toyota Tacoma Luxury Motorhome
The words “Toyota Tacoma” and “motorhome” do not typically go together unless it is something like “I tow my Toyota Tacoma with my motorhome.” Well, throw those expectations out the window because today, we are talking about a $325,000 Tacoma motorhome conversion. Yes, you read that right.
This beauty, which was on display at the inaugural Overland Expo West 2021, is equal parts home-on-wheels and off-roading beast. Created by TruckHouse, there is nothing quite like this completely custom Tacoma build.
Matt, the co-founder of TruckHouse, was gracious enough to give us a thorough tour of this unbelievable rig. Check out the details below.
The Concept
Designed to fill the niche between a Sprinter Van and bigger expedition vehicles, this unique creation was inspired by the rebuild of a 1987 Toyota Sunrader—essentially a pickup truck with a fiberglass camper on the back—that Matt and his crew brought to life.
The camper itself is a one-piece composite shell that is reinforced with carbon fiber. It has no seams, which means it will not leak. The material used also keeps the entire unit incredibly light, especially given the size. Every detail, no matter how minute, is custom-designed to perfectly mirror the factory body lines of the Tacoma.
To compensate for the additional weight—and inevitable off-road abuse—the frame of the Toyota Tacoma is reinforced. There is even a torsion-free subframe that allows the Tacoma to flex as though the camper is not there.
The Interior
It is hard to imagine a Toyota Tacoma sporting a fully livable RV space, but TruckHouse has pulled it off in tremendous fashion. This camper build features a kitchen with an induction stovetop and running hot water, a convection microwave oven, fridge/freezer, A/C, heat, and even heated floors.
The details inside the camper are thoughtfully appointed, including grain-matched teak trim from the cabinet faces and to the doors. All the blinds are full blackout with integrated screens, and the windows open awning style to provide open-air views.
Above the cab, the TruckHouse camper sports a queen bed with four windows and a skylight. There is even a TV that is viewable from the bed or from the dinette (which converts into an additional sleeping surface).
Beneath the bed, there is a passthrough to the cab, which has also been modified. The rear bench seat is customized to be two captain’s chairs, storage, or a combination thereof, allowing access between the camper and cab.
Finally, there is a full wet bath that has a cassette toilet, shower, and vent fan. All of this is connected to 30 gallons of fresh water and a 20-gallon grey water tank. In other words, they have thought of everything.
Armor
Even campers need armor, especially when they have Toyota Tacoma bones. The TruckHouse Tacoma camper is no exception and features high-quality armor from front to rear.
In the front, this Tacoma is sporting a bumper from Southern Style OffRoad that hugs and complements the body lines. Nestled inside the bumper are a light bar from Baja Designs and a winch from Warn.
A custom rear bumper graces the back of the truck. Constructed of aluminum, this dual-swingout bumper adds additional storage and functionality while keeping weight to a minimum. This bumper retains your blind spot monitoring system, backup sensors, and backup camera.
Suspension, Gears, and More
Propelling this monster camper over any terrain is the long-travel suspension system. As you would expect from a build of this level, it features custom-tuned Fox Shocks front and rear. In the rear, a larger rear axle is supported by custom leaf springs, allowing the RV to perform off-road without compromising the integrity of the driveline and suspension.
The TruckHouse Toyota Tacoma also has 5.29 gears to help offset the additional weight of the camper and large brakes from Stoptech to ensure this beast can stop quickly and safely. Also available are a Magnusson Supercharger, bigger alternator, custom tune, and aftermarket radiator to help everything run as it should while powering the Tacoma RV down the road.
It is hard to imagine a more comprehensive and impressive overland camper that utilizes Toyota Tacoma bones. TruckHouse has created a truly masterful build that is equal parts luxury and functionality, setting the standard for midsized off-road RVs in the process. It was mind-blowing to experience this awesome manifestation of thousands of hours of design and hard work.
